Softball: Larkin’s bats on the attack against Elgin

Larkin's offensive onslaught was too for Elgin on Thursday as the Royals cruised to a 15-0 win in four innings in Upstate Eight Conference action at Larkin.

"We were ready to play," said coach Anne Vogt. “There is a little sizzle off the rivalry with Elgin but it is still in existence. We really hit the ball well."

The Royals (10-9, 7-3) seized control with 3 runs in the first and 7 in the second. Kenya Ventura launched a long 3-run homer in the first inning.

"I got a fastball to hit," said Ventura. “I knew it was gone. We wanted to get off to a good start."

Larkin put the game away with a 7-run second.

With 13 hitters coming to the plate, the big hits for the hosts came on a 3-run homer by Brynn Kerber and a solo shot from winning pitcher MacKenzie Wemken, her first of the season.

"This is always an important game against our rival (Elgin)," said Kerber. "We were ready to play. I got a fastball to hit and got all of it."

Wemken was outstanding in the circle. In four innings of work, Wemken struck out 6 without allowing a walk. The visiting Maroons managed only 2 singles, 1 each from Monica Martinez and Abigail Mutolo.

"I was really focused," said Wemken. "I was hitting my spots."

Leadoff hitter Yesenia Escobar set the table for the Royals’ prolific offense.

Escobar, who was on base all 4 times she was at the play, was 3-for 3 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.

"Yusenia does a great job as a leadoff hitter," said Vogt. “She does a great job of making contact and getting on base."

The Royals collected 10 hits, coaxed 9 walks and stole 5 bases.
