Jail time, community service for sisters who attacked Aurora police officer

Two sisters have been sentenced to four months in jail for attacking an Aurora police officer.

Jennifer M. Taylor, 26, and Sheba A. Taylor, 29, both of the 7000 block of South Paulina Street in Chicago, will also have to serve four years of probation and perform 200 hours of community service.

Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler sentenced them last Friday.

A jury convicted them on Jan. 19. And in a separate trial in another courtroom that day, another jury convicted their brother, Paul Sherrod-Taylor, of aggravated battery of a police officer. Sherrod-Taylor, 32, lives in the 600 block of Elmwood Drive, Aurora.

All three were acquitted, however, on charges of attempted murder.

Jennifer Taylor was found guilty of aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated battery on a public way, and aggravated assault of a police officer.

Sheba Taylor was convicted of aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated battery on a public way ‒ causing bodily harm, and resisting a peace officer ‒ causing injury.

Aurora police reported that an officer made a traffic stop on June 21, 2021, when a car driven by Sherrod-Taylor disobeyed a stop sign. The sisters were in the car.

After the car pulled into a private driveway, the officer approached the vehicle. Both sisters got out of the car and refused to get back in when ordered to do so, according to a news release from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

The officer tried to handcuff Sherrod-Taylor, who shoved him and ran away. As the officer chased him, Sherrod-Taylor stopped, turned around, put up his fists and yelled at the officer to “keep running boy,” according to the news release.

The officer returned to his squad car and was attacked by the Taylor sisters.

Sherrod-Taylor called 911 and told a dispatcher that he would kill the officer unless police arrived immediately, and yelled at the officer that he was going to kill him.

When other officers arrived, Sheba Taylor was sitting on the officer’s chest and neck and, Jennifer Taylor was holding him down.

Sherrod-Taylor is due to be sentenced on May 16.
