Climate issues surrounding EVs

Thank you, Jenny Whidden, for your recent report on how road-building material, specifically cement, affects our environment. I also appreciate the WSJ digest on a recent Saturday Opinion page that offers opposing evidence regarding the value and future of electric trucks. I can see how, because of heavy batteries, those trucks will damage roads and be forced to carry lighter loads to compensate.

I learned from another report that electric vehicle owners are experiencing increased tire wear compared to owners of conventional vehicles, which led me to wonder how tires are reused or recycled. It’s good to know the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association and University of Missouri are working together to research the economic and environmental benefits of using ground tire rubber in asphalt to reduce noise and frequency of road repairs.

I hope Ms. Whidden is looking into this same subject to see what is being done here in Illinois to recycle tires, and what precautions are in place to avoid the danger of fires, pollution and disease caused by stockpiles of discarded tires.
