Fremont School District earns Meritorious Budget Award

Fremont School District 79 has been recognized by the Association of School Business Officials International for excellence in budget presentation with the Meritorious Budget Award for fiscal year 2023-24. This is the 14th consecutive year that FSD79 has received the award.

The recognition reflects the commitment of Fremont School District 79 in achieving the highest standards of budgeting. The Meritorious Budget Award designation is the result of an objective external evaluation of the overall management and communication of the school district’s budget.

“Fremont School District 79 is honored to once again be named a recipient of the Meritorious Budget Award,” FSD79 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Trisha Kocanda said. “As a district, we remain committed to implementing high-quality standards for fiscal practices, further evidenced by the creation of our Financial & Facility Stewardship strategic goal area. This award is a well-deserved representation of the hard work and commitment of our business office.”

Participants submit their applications and budget documents to a panel of school financial professionals who review the materials for compliance with the MBA Criteria Checklist and other requirements and provide expert feedback that districts can use to improve their budget documents. Districts that meet the stringent program requirements may earn either the MBA or Pathway to the MBA, an introductory program that allows districts to ease into full MBA compliance.

“Presenting a budget that is both accessible and accurate is crucial for school districts to clearly communicate and build trust with their communities,” said Jim Rowan, CAE, SFO, ASBO International Executive Director. “The Meritorious Budget Award program provides districts with the resources and tools to do just that, and the districts that receive the award are recognized for their commitment to upholding nationally recognized budget presentation standards.”
