Scharnowski stands above his peers

University of Alabama senior forward Max Scharnowski (Wheaton Academy) received the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award during the Crimson Tide’s open Final Four practice, April 5 at Phoenix’s State Farm Stadium.
The award was given to the Final Four player with the highest grade-point average. An Elgin native, Scharnowski had a 4.0 GPA in biology and premed. He has been a President’s List student and a member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
In March, Scharnowski was recognized as Alabama’s representative to the SEC Community Service Team for men’s basketball. He led his team in community service hours, doing things like handing out candy to children at Alabama’s Halloween Extravaganza and volunteering with the Tuscaloosa Salvation Army Angel Tree program.
On Saturday the University of Denver beat Boston College 2-0 to win the NCAA men’s Division I hockey championship in St. Paul, Minn. Three players with local ties played in the game — Denver junior defenseman Sean Behrens (Barrington) and junior forward Jack Devine (Glencoe), and Boston College freshman forward Gabe Perreault (Hinsdale).
Perreault, named to Pro Ambitions’ All-Rookie Team, was a Hockey East All-Star second-team pick after finishing second on Boston College in assists and fourth in points. Overall, in 36 games Perreault notched 60 points on 19 goals with 41 assists.
Behrens was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s top “defensive defenseman.” In 44 games overall he blocked a team-high 70 shots while recording 31 points. Behrens cleared the crease, earning a team-high 53 penalty minutes and a plus-26. Also on Denver’s 2022 champions, on Saturday Behrens assisted on the Pioneers’ second goal.
Another 2022 champion, Devine led Denver in scoring with 27 goals and 29 assists for 56 points in 44 games. He scored a team-high 9 power play goals. A top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, Devine earned NCHC first-team honors.
On Friday, Devine was named a first-team pick on the CCM/American Hockey Coaches Association West All-American team. Lane Hutson (North Barrington), a sophomore Boston College defender, was a repeat first-team pick in the East, where Perreault was a second-team pick.
A second-round pick by the Montreal Canadians in 2022, on Friday Hutson signed a three-year contract. At Boston this season he scored 15 goals with 34 assists for 49 points. His two-year totals of 30 goals, 67 assists and 97 points topped all active NCAA defenseman.
Elmira College in New York reached the Division III women’s hockey national championship, losing 4-1 to Wisconsin-River Falls. Elmira junior forward Sabrina Shvartsman (New Trier) finished with 7 goals, 11 assists and plus-19 in 28 games. Graduate student forward Kelly Millins (York) played in 19 games for the Soaring Eagles.
