Fuel leaks into Buffalo Grove pond; source remains unclear

What appears to be a small amount of diesel fuel leaked into a detention pond in a Buffalo Grove business park last week, village officials said.

Buffalo Grove fire and public works crews responded to the pond in the 1000 block of Johnson Drive at approximately 6:45 p.m. Thursday after receiving a report of a fuel leak, said Molly Gillespie, the village’s communications and engagement director.

The pond is owned by the Chevy Chase Business Park.

Gillespie said the area was sealed off with booms, described as floating, physical barriers that slow the spread of oil and keep it contained. An Illinois Environmental Protection Agency representative confirmed that the booms are absorbing the runoff appropriately, she added.

The source of the leak has not yet been determined, Gillespie said. The IEPA is investigating.
