Fish consumption advisory for Lake Zurich, Waukegan

Updated testing for what are known as “forever chemicals” has resulted in fish consumption advisories for nine bodies of water in Illinois, including Lake Zurich and Waukegan North Harbor in Lake County.

Certain fish in Lake Zurich should only be eaten once a month and from Waukegan North Harbor once a week, Illinois Department of Public Health advisories say.

Updated testing last fall included testing for per-and-polyfluouralkyl substances known as PFAS. Besides site specific updates, a statewide methylmercury advisory cautions those who are nursing, pregnant or may become pregnant and children under 15 to eat no more than one meal per week of predatory fish such as bass, walleye or salmon.
