Augustana College’s Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble comes to the suburbs for spring concert tour

The Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, will be coming to the Chicago suburbs as part of its spring Midwest tour.

They will be performing at 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 314 W. Vallette St. in Elmhurst; 7 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at First Congregational Church, 900 S. Eighth St. in West Dundee; and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1133 Pfingsten Road in Northbrook.

No tickets are required, but freewill donations will be accepted in support of their tour.

The Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble, directed by Michael Zemek, is a select treble ensemble for students who wish to develop advanced choral skills and a better understanding of various styles of choral music composed for sopranos and altos.

The ensemble's chosen repertoire — from folk to contemporary, ancient to modern — focuses on moving forward and upward, overcoming challenges and celebrating compassion. The choir performs on campus and at community events.

The compositions featured during the April tour include music from Ukraine, Finland, Sweden and Indonesia. They highlight some of the most important women composers writing for choirs today.

“By intentionally performing more music composed by women, the Jenny Lind Vocal Ensemble is contributing to a more inclusive and diverse musical landscape, enriching the experience for performers and audiences alike,” Zemek said. “Singing their music inspires and empowers us as we celebrate the expansion of our repertoire to include more artistic voices.”
