Driver injured after crashing into building in Gurnee

The driver and sole occupant of a pickup truck was injured Sunday night when the vehicle crashed into a Gurnee strip mall, police said.

No other injuries were reported but business patrons were evacuated as a precaution because the Chevy Silverado hit a gas meter, authorities said.

Police called to the 6400 block of Grand Avenue about 8:40 p.m. found the pickup with significant damage and a large hole in the back of the building, Gurnee police Detective Shawn Gaylor said.

Two tenants, a Panera restaurant and an Xfinity store, share the building at the northeast corner of Hunt Club Road and Grand Avenue.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no injuries were reported inside the building, according to Gaylor.

The driver, a 49-year-old man from Gurnee, was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries, authorities said. His condition was not available Monday afternoon.

Preliminary investigation shows the driver may have been experiencing a medical issue at the time of the crash, Gaylor said. He was cited for reckless driving and criminal damage to property.
