Premieres, classics and a musical set for Goodman’s 99th season

Goodman Theatre announced its 99th season will include two world premieres (one yet to be named), two classic revivals (one starring Oscar and Emmy winner Helen Hunt), two Chicago premieres and a musical, a rarity for the Chicago theater.

The 2024-2025 season also includes the 47th production of Goodman’s beloved “A Christmas Carol”; the 20th New Stages Festival showcasing in-development works; a celebration of Indigenous artistry in collaboration with the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian; and the inaugural season of Goodman’s Theater for the Very Young, designed for kids 5 and younger.

The 856-seat Albert Theatre opens its season Sept. 14 with the courtroom drama “Inherit the Wind” by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee and directed by artistic associate Henry Godinez. Next up, Helen Hunt (“As Good as It Gets,” “Mad About You”) stars in artistic director Susan V. Booth’s revival of Harold Pinter’s “Betrayal” (Feb. 8-March 16, 2025). That’s followed by the premiere of Zora Howard’s “BUST, An Afrocurrentist Play” (April 19-May 18, 2025). The Albert Theatre season concludes with a revival of “The Color Purple” (June 21-July 27, 2025) based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film.

Taking place in the smaller Owen Theatre is the Chicago premiere of Eboni Booth’s “Primary Trust” (Oct. 5-Nov. 3) followed by the Chicago premiere of “Fat Ham” (Jan. 11-Feb. 23, 2025), James Ijames’ Pulitzer-winning update of “Hamlet” produced in collaboration with Definition Theatre. The Owen season concludes in May/June 2025 with a yet-to-be-named premiere by Jordan Harrison, directed by Tony Award-winner David Cromer.

Performances take place at 170 N. Dearborn St., Chicago. Season subscriptions starting at $48 are available at goodmantheatre.org or (312) 443-3800. Individual tickets go on sale in July.
