Elgin Golden K Kiwanis hosts weekly programs with speakers

Elgin’s Golden K Kiwanis Club invites anyone interested to attend one of the weekly meetings to learn about local programs or institutions. There is always time to interact with the speaker after the presentation.

In March, attendees first heard from Jerry Johnson, director of Garfield Field Museum in Campton Hills, about its restoration efforts, including new rooftops, wetland restoration, tuckpointing and restoration of original bricks. On March 13, Len Bogacki of the BSA Three Fires Council talked about the Scouts scene in our area. On March 20, Mary Hewitt and Lori Acevedo of All Peoples Food Pantry talked about the food pantry's history as the food distribution system moved from First Congregational Church to various locations. It now provides food for over 17,000 families. The Golden K club has donated $3,231 to their work. On March 27, club member Bob Langlois reported on Elgin Cooperative Ministry, where he is chair emeritus. This collection of 25 local churches of all denominations supply Soup Kettle meals to many people in need. He shared statistics to help club members understand Soup Kettle clients: 80% are over 40 years old, mostly males, with 50% having no income and 24% having part-time or seasonal work. Often these families must choose among costs for shelter, medicine, and food. Most are long-time Elgin residents, and 20% have a disability. The ministry works with Northern Illinois Food Bank and Food for Greater Elgin.

On April 10, the speaker will be Kyle Martin, owner of Martin Auto Service in Elgin. On April 17, Linda Rock of the Elgin History Museum will talk about Elgin Academy and the City of Elgin. On April 24, author Gary Koca will talk about the Chicago Cubs and old movie stars books. On April 24, the guest will be Elgin Fire Chief Robb Cagann. On May 1, Dan Fox will talk about “Letting the Good Times Roll: The Grand Victoria comes to Elgin.”

Elgin Golden K meetings are at 9 a.m. Wednesdays in Lind Hall of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 357 Division St. in downtown Elgin.
