Naperville police find guns in two unrelated incidents at Topgolf

Two Cook County men arrested on weapons charges at the Topgolf in Naperville over the weekend remain in the DuPage County jail after a judge denied their pretrial release.

Dijon Lane, 34, of Blue Island, faces felony charges of being an armed habitual offender and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. He also faces one misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver.

Tavell Jackson, 44, of Maywood, faces felony charges of being an armed habitual criminal, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

The two men were arrested in unrelated incidents at Topgolf, 3211 Odyssey Court in Naperville.

“What I find particularly troubling are the allegations that both men brought a loaded firearm to a family friendly recreation facility,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. “This type of behavior is inexcusable and will be fully prosecuted.”

According to a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office, Lane was arrested on Friday evening after police noticed a smell of cannabis coming from his car. When they asked Lane to exit his car, they observed a loaded Taurus .40 caliber gun, with eight rounds in the magazine, in plain view near the gas pedal, according to the news release.

At around 10:05 p.m. Saturday, Naperville police were conducting routine patrol at Topgolf when they noticed a weapon in plain view in the netting of a back pocket of the front passenger seat of a car occupied by Jackson. The gun was later identified as a Taurus 9 mm gun with 12 rounds in the magazine. Police also recovered 12.4 grams of cocaine from Jackson’s jacket, according to the news release.

Naperville police have other gun-related arrests at the entertainment facility in recent months.

“Our proactive policing efforts continue to result in illegally possessed gund being taken off our streets,” Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres said. “This is a critical part of our obligation to safeguard our community, and we’ll continue to engage in our proactive efforts throughout the city.”

Lane is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on April 22. Jackson is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on April 29.
