Celebrate Earth Day with programs this month at Gail Borden Library

Celebrate National Garden Month:
Learn about gardening for the future by becoming part of a gardening movement that heals the land while providing for the other beings who share it. The program with the Elgin Garden Club and Kane County Wild Ones will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the Main Library Meadows Community Rooms, 270 N. Grove Ave. in Elgin.
Garden Chat Discussion Group:
If you enjoy gardening and have questions or information to share, this discussion group is for you. Join the Garden Chat Discussion Group from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16 at the Rakow Branch, 2751 W. Bowes Road, Elgin.
The Great Garbage Challenge:
Kids, ages 6 to 10, will have fun turning a piece of garbage into something that can be used again in a different way during the “Full STEAM Ahead: The Great Garbage Challenge” program on Tuesday, April 16, at the South Elgin Branch, 127 S. McLean Blvd. Register for one of two sessions being offered at 2 or 4:45 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a clean piece of garbage or an item that can be turned into something different.
Exploring Illinois’ State Park System:
Join travel lover and retired nurse Celeste Brown on her quest to visit each Illinois State Park in “That’s in Illinois? Exploring Illinois’ State Park System.” It will be 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, in the Main Library Elgin Room. Brown will talk about several of the 150 state parks, their wildlife and landscapes.
Libraries and Local Oaks:
Gail Borden Library has been enriching lives for 150 years and local oak forests have done the same. Discover 15 ways that local libraries and oak forests are essential to our thriving communities, providing roots, support and inspiration in “Libraries and Local Oaks — Inspiring and Enriching Our Lives” on Saturday, April 20. It will be 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Main Library Elgin Room. The program will be presented by Ed Collins, director of land preservation of the McHenry County Conservation District.
Native vs. Invasive Plants:
Celebrate Earth Day with a lunchtime program on identifying native vs. invasive plant species, followed by a hike around the Main Library, weather permitting. “Earth Day: Native vs. Invasive Plants” with Corey from Kane County Wild Ones will be offered at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22 in the Main Library Meadows Community Rooms.
Earth Day Family Festival:
Celebrate Earth Day with fun activities and enjoy a performance by Firefly Family Theatre, a puppet show and more from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at the Rakow Branch. The Wild Ones will be leading nature walks. No registration is needed.
