PJ Parkinson’s Support to host inaugural retreat for Parkinson’s families

Grass-roots organization expands outreach with free retreat tailored for Parkinson’s patients and caregivers

PJ Parkinson’s Support, a grass-roots organization originally based in Knoxville, Tennessee, will host its first retreat for families affected by Parkinson’s disease from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at Riverside Receptions in Geneva.

Founder Isabel Senft-Daniel recently relocated to the area and immediately immersed herself into continuing her mission.

Senft stated, “My objective is to present resources that can help improve the quality of life for patients and caregivers and to let them know that they are not alone in what can be an overwhelming journey.”

What started out nearly 10 years ago as a single support group has flourished into over 10 groups under the PJP umbrella. The group is expanding its outreach by introducing retreats tailored for Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers.

The retreat is provided free of charge and offers a day filled with activities such as group exercises, educational sessions, dancing, acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, speech therapy, cooking demonstrations, and a complimentary light breakfast and lunch. The event will conclude with a cocktail reception, allowing an opportunity to socialize with new made friends.

Representatives from various local organizations and volunteers, including Rock Steady Boxing, Movement Revolution, music therapist Mary Helen Ekstam, physical therapist Alison Kennedy from Visualize Home, occupational therapist Dina Karsonas, yoga instructor Tey Punsalan, as well as other related professionals, will conduct introductory group sessions and assist attendees with the activities detailed above.

In conjunction with Parkinson’s Awareness Month in April, PJ Parkinson has chosen Geneva as the location for their inaugural Relax & Rewind Retreat.

Preregistration is required, and the event will be limited to one hundred participants. Interested individuals can sign up at www.PJParkinsons.org under 'What We Do Events.'

A limited number of booths are available for businesses interested in sponsorship or showcasing products and services, and volunteers are needed to assist with registration.

Additionally, a limited number of hotel rooms are reserved at the Herrington Inn and Spa for retreat participants at rates starting at $169 per room per night. Special thanks to our event sponsor, Supernus Pharmaceuticals, and all local partners.
