More than 100 people enjoyed a Purim celebration Sunday held by the Chabad Jewish Center of Arlington Heights at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library.

Purim celebrates the thwarting of an attempt to destroy the Jewish people instigated by Haman, advisor to Ahasuerus, king of the ancient Persian Empire. The attempt was foiled by Ahasuerus’ Jewish queen, Esther, and her cousin, Mordecai.

Guests read from the Book of Esther, enjoyed food including shawarma and falafel, had their faces painted and made their own Hamantaschen, triangular cookie given its name by the hat worn by the infamous Haman.
