Standing overdone
I have attended many theatrical performances since coming to Aurora in 2002. There have been very few where I thought the cast did not do a good job and I enjoyed the various shows. What concerns me is that every single performance at every theater ended in a standing ovation.
When I was young, a standing ovation was reserved for truly great performances. There were very few awarded and those performances were so incredible that you couldn’t resist jumping to your feet and clapping exuberantly. I do not want to denigrate the current performances at the various theaters. They are very good indeed, but by giving every one a standing ovation, how do you indicate a truly exceptional performance?
I think audiences should be more discerning and save their standing ovations for the rare exceptional performances they experience.
