Elgin boy wins at inaugural Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation state championship

Darek Diaz of Elgin has been wrestling since he was 5 years old. Darek is an exceptional student at Hillcrest Elementary School and has an extremely bubbly personality.

Early in the year on Jan. 28, the Hillcrest Elementary student earned a national championship title, winning first place at Kids Folkstyle Nationals in Crown Point, Indiana, making him No. 1 in the U.S. for boys 10U division at 53 lbs.

This past weekend on March 16-17, Darek and fellow ISI Wrestling Club members traveled to Decatur, Illinois, for the inaugural Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation state championship where Darek earned first place.

That makes him No. 1 in Illinois for Intermediate Boys Division at 55 lbs.

Darek wrestled numerous matches for both of these tournaments without his opponents scoring a point on him. He went into these tournaments determined and confident with his skills.

Darek trains at least 5 times a week and watches an abundant amount of wrestling from Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation to college to Olympic level. Wrestling has been a part of his parents’ lives. His dad, Sam Diaz, has been coaching Darek from the beginning of his career.
