Movie of the month: The Mean Season

Interested in a truly awful newspaper movie? Well, you could try this 1985 suspense film that is idiotic on several levels despite a reasonably good ensemble cast. A younger Kurt Russell plays a star Miami newspaper reporter who fields phone calls from a psychotic killer while his girlfriend, played by Muriel Hemingway, nags him to remember his pledge to move to Colorado to become a small town newspaper editor. Guess who the killer, played by Richard Jordan, ends up targeting? A dashing Andy Garcia and Richard Masur also star. Adapted from the novel, “In the Heat of the Summer.” Directed by Phillip Borsos.
