First responders rescue driver from car submerged in Grayslake pond

First responders rescued the driver of a car that was sinking in a Grayslake pond Friday.

The rescue took place next to the shopping center at 100 S. Atkinson Road just after noon, authorities said.

As they arrived on scene, police said they saw someone trapped inside the vehicle as it was beginning to submerge.

Officers jumped in the pond and shattered the only window not yet submerged in an attempt to rescue the occupant, officials said. Crews from the Grayslake Fire Department soon arrived and helped to successfully complete the extrication.

Paramedics took the person to the hospital for evaluation.

Police said the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
