Signal Hill, DAR donates $1,000 to purchase books for District 220 schools

Barrington-based Signal Hill Chapter, NSDAR, donated $1,000 to purchase books for young readers at Sunny Hill Elementary School in Carpentersville, and for children at the Barrington Early Learning Center.

The chapter’s Community Classroom chairwoman, Joyce Moynihan, presented the donation and Becky Gill, director of Elementary Curriculum and Instruction at Barrington District 220, identified the book titles needed within the district.

Books that were purchased for students at Sunny Hill Elementary School were for current and incoming kindergarten students and families to support summer reading. A total of 119 various book titles were purchased with donated funds. Books will be shared with incoming families during kindergarten meetings this spring, where reading resource teachers will also support parents and families on modeling language and questioning techniques to support their children in learning how to read.

Books purchased for students at the Barrington Early Learning Center were for the Story Walk/ Community Conversations event. The donated funds were used to purchase 42 copies of “Bear Snores On.” This event supports early literacy and provides parental education regarding how to support literacy and modeling of language when reading to children at home.
