Political screed was inappropriate
I was greatly impressed with David McGrath's memories of the Traveling Vietnam Memorial. Both my college roommate and I volunteered as advanced ROTC cadets during college and were commissioned as Army 2nd Lieutenants in June, 1963. The Vietnam “police action” was just heating up then. I reported for active duty in May 1964 and was lucky enough to complete my active service in the United States. My friend, however, deferred his service for two years to obtain a master's degree. He became a helicopter pilot in Vietnam but was never shot down or captured. While in the active Army, I met a young office named Lawrence Beek whose next assignment was Viett Nam. His name appears on the memorial wall.
I have seen both the memorial in Washington, D.C., and the traveling memorial. Each time it was a moving experience.
You can only imagine my disgust in discovering that McGrath's reference to the memorial wall was only preparation for a politically motivated screed against Donald Trump.
Both David McGrath and the Herald should be ashamed.
