Man charged in connection with recent gunfire in Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg

Hoffman Estates police Thursday arrested an 18-year-old village resident on charges stemming from two gun-related crimes this week, while another reported firearm discharge remains under investigation.

Jake A. Mateos of the 600 block of Bode Circle in Hoffman Estates initially was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a firearm in relation to the two crimes reported in town.

In addition to those charges, Schaumburg police also charged Mateos with aggravated discharge of a firearm for a reported crime on the 1000 block of Boston Harbor on Wednesday.

At 10:51 p.m. Monday, officers were called to the area of Lakeview Lane and Western Street in Hoffman Estates for a report of shots fired, but did not find any victims, damage or suspects, police said.

At 9:08 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to a report of shots fired on the 200 block of Flagstaff Lane, and again found no victims or damage. But on this occasion they did see five spent shell casings on the street.

Officers were back in the area at 4:41 p.m. Thursday due to the recent gunfire reports and saw a person they considered suspicious near the intersection of Flagstaff Lane and Washington Boulevard, police said.

While speaking to him, officers spotted a firearm with an extended magazine and a mounted laser light. Based on findings, they detained him without incident and identified him as Mateos, police said.

Following an investigation, the two Class 4 felony charges were filed against Mateos based on the Wednesday and Thursday events. Monday’s report of reckless discharge of a firearm still is under investigation and additional charges are pending against Mateos, police said.

In the Schaumburg shooting, Mateos is accused of discharging a firearm six times outside a residence, with four of the rounds having struck the home near a bedroom window but resulting in no injuries, police said.

Schaumburg police said Mateos knew the residents of that home through a friend. They said he possessed a 9 mm handgun when taken into custody.

An initial court hearing regarding his eligibility for pretrial release is scheduled for Saturday.
