Skyview: Skating on a cold and colorful night

Hockey players tend to be hearty individuals. This trio was skating after dark in temperatures most of us avoid even to take the trash out.

The rink at Recreation Park in Arlington Heights has lights mounted on a nearby rooftop that lets people enjoy an after-dark skate even in freezing temperatures. To the sport-minded skaters, the lights look white and the area is very bright. But to an overhead drone the lights reflect green hues because they are some variation of fluorescent or mercury vapor lights.

Cameras record light, and the many different kinds of artificial light create many different hues that the camera sees but our eyes do not. Or rather, our brains correct our eyes and show us a more natural white light. You have probably encountered many different light sources today and never realized you were moving in a rainbow of colors.
