Attorney Richard Hillsberg to receive founders award at North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic’s May 2 fundraiser

North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic in Highland Park will celebrate its ninth anniversary and the opportunity to come together on Thursday, May 2.

Business owners, civic leaders, and supporters will come together for a reception celebrating the legal aid clinic’s success and growth at 6:30 p.m. at Pinstripes, 1150 Willow Road, Northbrook.

The event will showcase the “Justice in Bloom” theme, symbolizing the belief that supporting NSLAC fosters a community where everyone has access to high-quality, comprehensive, and equitable legal representation.

The evening's festivities will include a reception commemorating NSLAC's success and growth, a raffle, and the highlight of the event – the presentation of the Nancy R. Rotering Founder’s Award to attorney Richard Hillsberg.

Co-chaired by Leslie Fields Katz and Jaime Rhum, the event aims to raise funds to sustain accessible, quality, and equitable legal services in domestic violence, housing, and immigration for low-income and at-risk individuals in suburban Cook County and Lake County.

“NSLAC has positively impacted over 8,000 individuals since we opened our doors nine years ago, ensuring they maintain their residences, secure legal immigration status, or break free from abusive relationships,” stated Executive Director Susan Shulman. “This remarkable growth in our core areas underscores the invaluable support we've garnered and the persistent demand for our services in the communities we are dedicated to serving. As we look ahead, we eagerly anticipate uniting to celebrate our achievements in expanding access to justice for those in need, particularly during this challenging and uncertain period in history.”

The annual Nancy R. Rotering Founder’s Award, established in 2018 to honor the leadership and public service of Mayor Nancy R. Rotering, will be presented to Richard Hillsberg, of counsel attorney at Kovitz Shifrin Nesbit specializing in litigation, mechanics lien foreclosures, bankruptcy, and insolvency solutions.

His exemplary career includes service as an Army Judge Advocate officer at the 5th Army Headquarters and various leadership roles within esteemed law firms and the community. He served on NSLAC’s board of directors from 2015 to 2022 and has volunteered as NSLAC’s general counsel, a position he has held since 2022.
