Sherwood Elementary teacher honored as finalist for 2024 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching

Sherwood Elementary kindergarten teacher Christina Tortorello was named as a finalist on Tuesday, Feb. 20, for the prestigious 2024 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Tortorello is among 30 finalists chosen from a group of more than 600 educators who were nominated.

The Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching celebrate educators for their enduring and positive influence on the lives of students and the broader school communities. Finalists for the award are recognized for their remarkable contributions to the educational and developmental progress of their students, evidenced through their teaching methods and outcomes.

“These finalists have shown outstanding commitment and made a positive impact on students,” Golden Apple President Alan Mather said. “We are proud to honor these educators, acknowledging their crucial role in shaping the future of education and inspiring the next generation.”

As a finalist, Tortorello is in the running to receive several awards, including $5,000 cash and an opportunity to become a Fellow of the Golden Apple Academy of Educators. The 10 winners will be announced in the spring.

North Shore School District 112 is committed to excellence in education and supports its teachers in their professional development and recognition. Tortorello’s nomination is a testament to the district’s dedication to creating environments where educators can thrive and make lasting impacts on their students’ lives.
