Three charged with stealing truck, trailer, other vehicles, in 3 suburbs and Chicago

Vehicles taken in Elmhurst, Bensenville, Northlake, police say

Three men have been charged with stealing trucks, an SUV and a flatbed trailer in three suburbs and Chicago.

Kamil Spieczynski, Sebastian Nawrot, and Mateusz Wojtowicz face charges in DuPage County, according to a news release from the Elmhurst Police Department.

On Feb. 1, a business in the 500 block of North Michigan Street in Elmhurst reported a flatbed trailer had been stolen from a fenced, locked parking lot.

Video and license plate-reader cameras helped detectives learn a Ford pickup truck, stolen just prior in Northlake, was used to remove the trailer at about 12:30 a.m. Detectives also learned that a black Toyota Prius registered to Spieczynski was parked near the Elmhurst theft.

According to police, Nawrot used to work for the Northlake business where the pickup was stolen and had access to the truck’s keys.

Police obtained a warrant allowing them to put a GPS tracker on the Prius, according to DuPage County court records. Early Feb. 13, Elmhurst and Bensenville detectives watching the Prius said they saw Spieczynski, Nawrot and Wojtowicz steal a Volvo semi-truck tractor from a lot on the 600 block of Route 83 in Bensenville, records show.

The trio abandoned it when it became stuck in the mud, returned to the business and took another Volvo truck, according to court records.

Nawrot drove off in the truck; the other two left in the Prius, police said.

Illinois State Police tried to stop the stolen truck. It was abandoned near Covered Bridge and Barrington roads in South Barrington.

The Prius was found on Liberty Drive in South Barrington. Spieczynski was arrested in a nearby field.

On Feb. 14, Elmhurst police went to a truck parking lot in Woodstock, where Spieczynski had been renting space. They found two stolen vehicles ‒ a Ford Transit van stolen in Bensenville on Jan. 27 and a 2017 Maserati Levante SUV that was reported stolen in Chicago on Aug. 13.

Nawrot and Wojtowicz were arrested Tuesday in Elmhurst.

Spieczynski, 37, of the 4400 block of Whitehall Lane, Algonquin, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle valued at $25,000 or more and one felony count of possession of burglary tools.

Nawrot, 25, of the 1100 block of Grove Avenue, Bensenville, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle valued at $25,000 or more.

Wojtowicz, 23, of the 7300 block of Belmont Avenue, Chicago, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a stolen motor vehicle valued at $25,000 or more.

Each has been freed pretrial.

For Spieczynski, DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden ruled there was no clear and convincing evidence of willful flight, according to court records.

For Wojtowicz and Nawrot, Dieden ruled prosecutors had not proven by clear and convincing evidence that the men committed a qualifying offense and had not established probable cause they had committed felony offenses, according to court records.

Spieczynski and Wojtowicz were arrested in December by state and Algonquin police on charges of possession of stolen motor vehicles.
