Sherman health care workers receive valentine surprise

Front-line health care workers at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin enjoyed an early Valentine’s Day surprise from state Representatives Suzanne Ness and Anna Moeller’s staffers on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The representative and staff delivered fresh carnations and more than 400 handmade valentines and notes of gratitude written by students and community members.

“We are honored with how the community continues to show care and appreciation for our health care workers,” said Sheri De Shazo, president at Advocate Sherman Hospital. “These heartfelt cards and carnations encourage our teammates, knowing their compassion, expertise and dedication are valued and inspiring to others.”

Both Ness and Moeller’s office organized the “Healthcare Heroes Valentine’s Day Card Drive” and collected cards from their district offices, Fox River Valley Public Library, Boys & Girls Club of Dundee Township, Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association (NISRA — McHenry County), Crystal Lake High School, Sunny Hill Elementary School in Carpentersville, and St. Edward’s Catholic Preparatory Academy in Elgin.

“Health care workers work tirelessly to treat and protect our communities,” Moeller said. “Our third annual Valentine’s drive is one meaningful way we and the community can show appreciation and thank health care professionals for everything they do to keep us healthy.”

“They are present at the most vulnerable moments for patients, often at the expense of time with their own family,” Ness said. “The cards and notes created by community members are a small gesture to let health care workers know that they are noticed and truly appreciated. It’s a true reminder that all heroes do not need to wear capes.”
