Kids room style predictions

Whether the room is a nursery, a kid's bedroom or a playroom, the options are endless for how elaborate or simplistic it can be. The color scheme, theme, furniture and products within the room should all be age-appropriate and expressive of the child's personality.

Color choices

When it comes to color schemes, how about a little science behind the choice?

“When choosing colors for the kids' room in 2024, remember that according to the observations of psychologists, kids prefer rich energetic colors such as purple, red and pink and to incorporate geometric shapes. For children a little older (ages 9-11) warm, but not so flashy colors are suitable, such as orange, yellow and green,” according to NewDecorTrends.com.

Market trends, however, are showing more neutral colors and themes. Themed options for the walls, according to Pottery Barn Kids, are navy, powder blue, forest green, black, bright white, beige, lavender, pastel pink, floral wallpaper, teal, soothing gray, shiplap, chalkboard paint, brushstroke wall decal, wood wall, two-toned and striped.

Make it a sleep haven

A quality bed will help your child get that ever-important sleep needed for good health and performing well in school. A top bed pick, according to BestProducts.com in a story titled “15 Kids Beds That Will Make Them Look Forward to Bedtime,” is Crate and Barrel’s Wes Twin Upholstered Wood Bed, with Elm and Oak Metal Canopy Kids Poster Bed, found on Walmart.com for $89, coming in right behind. The “best metal bed with multiple sizes'' is the Winston Porter Gabreial Platform bed and voted “most stylish” is the Pottery Barn Kids Chris Loves Julia Turned Wood bed.

Remember to consider the amount of space in the room and how much storage space is needed. Two great options for conserving space are the “best trundle” and “best storage bed,” the SYNGAR White Twin Bed Frame with Trundle Storage and Bookcase and Zipcode Design Aula 14-inch Storage Metal Platform bed.

Bunk beds also will help save space, or allow more kids to share the room. Last fall, New York Magazine chose nine of the “very best bunk beds,” with these beds making the list:

• “Best Overall Bunk,” Ikea Mydal Bunk Bed.

• “Best Bunk Bed for a Small Space,” Max & Lily Mid-Century Modern Twin over Twin Low Bunk Bed.

• “Best Luxury Small Space Bunk Bed,” Pottery Barn Kids Camden Twin-Over-Twin Low Bunk Bed.

• “Best Convertible Bed,” Pottery Barn Kids Camp Twin-Over-Twin Bunk Bed, with an average price of $1,799.

Personalizing the space

Personalizing your child’s bedroom to match their hobbies and interests will make it a place they enjoy spending time.

If your child likes reading, or will use the room for studying, consider a comfy book nook with a bean bag chair and multiple sources of lighting.

Keeping the room clean and organized will help keep your child focused and calm in the space. While this should be a team effort between parent and child, some tips will help the process go more smoothly. Keeping the area decluttered by regularly getting rid of unnecessary items is one strategy. Another is to label everything. Children are used to bins and areas being labeled in their classrooms, and continuing the practice at home will help keep the room tidy.

Storage options

Designate a drop spot, such as a box, a bag on wheels or any compartment where kids can quickly put all their toys away. Lastly create functional storage, such as shelving, durable bins, stackable cubbies and various-sized turntables to consolidate crafts or materials.
