Bacoa raises record-breaking funds for seniors

Bacoa, the Barrington area’s leading nonprofit on aging issues, celebrated its 40th anniversary on Feb. 3, at the seventh annual Dancing with the Barrington Stars Fundraiser. The popular event dazzled over 300 attendees with six dance performances by local leaders, who came out to raise funds and awareness for Bacoa’s mission to support older adults, caregivers and families through a wide range of services and education.

Raising more than $380,000, Bacoa was proud to report they surpassed their $330,000 goal and beat their previous year’s event record of $354,330.

“Our community is making a statement about the need for Bacoa and our services,” explained Terri Channer, Bacoa’s executive director. “We’ve seen a 40% increase in clients served the past two years, a number that will only grow as our population ages.”

From memory and social-engagement programs to helping older adults access necessities like food and transportation, Bacoa is a comprehensive resource on navigating aging.

This year’s dancers included local philanthropists Lauren Hills and Britini Wilkens, business leaders Lisa Davenport and Andy Golbienko, educators Dr. Avis and Mr. Cosey Proctor, St. Anne Catholic Community members Eryka and Rich Accordino, local Realtors Jackie Aparati and Cathy Schmidt and The Den Fitness owners Todd and Natalee Zehrer.

Sparking memories of classic dance performances from popular media like “Grease” and “Space Jam,” all the dancers left the crowd on their feet and cheering. All the dancers won awards like “Champions of the Ballroom” and “Judges’ Choice.” $135,550 of the event’s total was raised by supporters voting for their favorite dancers.

“We’re so proud of our Bacoa community. Our dancers, volunteers, staff, board members, and our amazing supporters made this an unforgettable night. Thousands of aging adults benefit from the work we’re able to do thanks to their efforts,” said Channer.
