Route 31 underpass in Geneva to close in March for railroad bridge construction

The Route 31 underpass in Geneva will be closed for four months, starting March 4, as the Union Pacific builds a new train bridge to accommodate a third set of railroad tracks.

The official detour route for traffic will direct drivers to use Route 25 from Fabyan Parkway in Batavia to Route 64 (Main Street) in St. Charles.

Local traffic can use Third Street in downtown Geneva, according to a news release from the city.

Union Pacific will build a new train bridge and modify pavement as part of its Third Main Line project. The work began in 2022.

The third set of tracks is being added from Peck Road in Geneva to Kress Road in West Chicago. The UP expects to finish the project this year.

Local traffic can use Third Street in Geneva, but drivers should be alert for pedestrians crossing the road throughout the downtown.

The project also will require temporary closures of the Third Street and Western Avenue crossings.

The temporary closure of the crossing at Third is scheduled for late June. The Western crossing is expected to be temporarily closed in mid-September.

The public can visit “Notify Me” at geneva.il.us to subscribe to future construction updates.

The work is part of a $100 million-plus project to alleviate freight train congestion at two bottlenecks ‒ one in Geneva and another between River Forest and Melrose Park.
