How do faithful justify support for Trump?

I have a non-judgmental, non-partisan question directed towards evangelical Christians in Iowa and all other red states. I am not inquiring out of malice, indignation nor casting aspersions. I am not questioning your political, economic or social views. Please help me to understand your unequivocal support of Donald J. Trump for POTUS.

I was raised Roman Catholic. At a very early age, I was taught the “golden rule:” treat others the way I wished to be treated. I was taught to be respectful, kind, and polite to all people. It was inculcated in me that we are all God’s creation regardless of race, gender, or creed.

And yet as the primaries continue in the upcoming election of 2024, the presumptive Republican nominee for POTUS, Donald J. Trump, has been charged in four criminal cases ranging from attempting to overturn the 2020 election, election interference in Georgia, providing hush money payments to an adult movie actress and withholding classified documents after leaving office. For the first time in 234 years, a POTUS was indicted - and a startling 91 times.

Furthermore, the former president’s behavior has been vile and abhorrent: belittling individuals ranging from John McCain, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and Nikki Haley. In addition, the former POTUS callously mocked a reporter with arthrogryposis and boasted of being entitled to grope women by their genitalia.

Please help me to understand how on one hand you embrace a religious doctrine based on love and equality but unflinchingly support a candidate for POTUS lacking the morals and values that you hold in high esteem.

As a vibrant, democratic republic, Americans should passionately embrace political, economic, and social views. Denigrating people with differing opinions or perceived as political rivals, however, is unacceptable.

Please help me to understand why you feel Donald J. Trump is the preeminent candidate to become the next POTUS. I look forward to reading your responses.
