Des Plaines resident scammed out of $16,000

A Des Plaines resident lost about $16,000 to someone who’d promised to sell him a classic car but never delivered the vehicle, police said this week.

The victim had contacted the purported seller in January after seeing an ad on Facebook Marketplace for a 1951 Chevrolet 3100 pickup truck, police said in a news release.

After the victim sent the money to Virginia as a wire transfer, a Jan. 26 delivery date was set. But the truck never arrived and the seller stopped communicating with the buyer, police said.
