From providing postpartum care to helping new parents gain confidence before heading home with their bundle of joy, OB-GYN nurse Katie Mayworm cherishes her role caring for families during one of life’s most memorable milestones.

“Babies bring a breath of fresh air to families and to life,” says Mayworm, 40, of Glenview. “It’s a joy to experience those special moments through our eyes.”

A registered nurse at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge since 2007, Mayworm’s compassion, collaborative nature and clinical expertise have made a resounding impact on patients and teammates alike. She was selected as a 2023 Nurse of the Year for her exemplary demonstration of Advocate Health Care’s core nursing values and unwavering delivery of best-in-class care.

“Central to Katie’s exceptional nursing practice is the desire to provide moms and newborns with the safe, supportive, high-quality care they need,” says Amanda Stoeckel, clinical nurse manager. “She is a remarkable role model, a true team player and a knowledgeable, well-respected clinician who is constantly raising the bar in pursuit of excellence.”

Nursing has always felt like a perfect fit for Mayworm, who grew up taking care of her grandmother who had suffered a stroke. She babysat frequently and was drawn to caring for children and families, prompting her to pursue a career in women’s health.

Not only is Mayworm committed to fostering a positive, safe environment, but she also navigates even the most challenging situations with grace and empathy. For parents who have lost an infant, she goes out of her way to honor their baby’s memory, accommodate their wishes and support them through their grief.

In addition to caring for patients, Mayworm leads and supports hospital-wide initiatives, sits on various committees and serves as a preceptor for new nurses. She is a leader among her peers and has a knack for translating complicated processes into comprehensible information.

“Advocate Health nurses deliver exceptional, evidence-based and equitable care to help all patients live fully,” says Jane Dus, Chief Nursing Officer of Advocate Health- Midwest Region. “However, it’s their ability to bring their most authentic selves to work each day that lets us bear witness to the compassionate and driven individuals they are. It is a true honor to celebrate this excellence in action.”

Over 750 nominations for this premier award were received on behalf of nurses from a variety of specialties across the patient care continuum. These frontline nurses represent diversity in their backgrounds and experiences, including honorees with decades of experience and others new to the profession yet already making an impact on their patients, colleagues and communities.

Nominations were submitted by clinicians and teammates and reviewed by peer committees for blinded judging according to each nominee’s passion for patient care, commitment to service, solution-oriented abilities and evidence-based practice.

Advocate Health Care is part of Advocate Health, which employs more than 42,000 nurses across the nation, including 27 acute care facilities and more than 500 sites of care in the Midwest.
