Bigger, bolder, better: New carpet and rug trends

Want to create a more visually pleasing, comfortable, and functional home heading into 2024?

It’s smart to keep up with trends afoot in the carpet and rug space, as these essential floor coverings can set the tone for any living space and immediately draw the eye.

“Carpeting and rugs can transform any space. Embracing the latest materials, styles, colors and design choices can help ensure that a given room feels current and cohesive while also enhancing property value,” says interior designer Artem Kropovinsky, founder of Arsight, a New York City-based interior design studio.

If it’s been a while since you’ve replaced your rugs or carpet, or if you want to shift from a dated, hard surface look to a cozier and foot-friendly option, take the time to ponder what will likely be popular in 2024.

“Sustainability and carpeting will remain paramount next year. Eco-friendly materials that don’t compromise on luxury or durability will be highly sought after, such as wool, sisal and jute,” says interior designer Nicholas Kaiko. “When it comes to color palettes, nature will have a strong influence. We will see a surge in earthy, natural tones – lush greens and olives as well as rich, grounding hues like sienna, umber and terracotta. These colors not only bring warmth but also create a harmonious connection with the outdoors.”

If you plan on refreshing your space and have a high-traffic area, “consider unique artisanal designs and vibrant colors,” suggests Madison Popper, an interior designer with design firm Chill Casa.

Another carpet drift picking up steam is texturing, especially in natural or neutral shades.

“Textured carpets will be far more common than patterned carpets, which are likely to be a rarity in 2024 design schemes,” Todd Saunders, CEO of FlooringStores, prognosticates. “Warm, earthy tones will also be popular, including taupe and beige.”

Others agree with the increased focus on textures.

“From understated patterns to distinct geometrics, there’s a textured carpet waiting to redefine spaces,” says Kropovinskiy, who adds that pallet preferences will continue to lean earthy, with hues of beige, brown, and green ranking highly.

Katherine Cohen, associate creative director for FLOR, a popular maker of carpet tiles, says texture is a time-tested way to add interest to any space, especially carpeting.

“Carpeting often serves as the canvas upon which the rest of the design elements in a room are built. Playing with texture adds depth and pattern, even when sticking to neutral colors. That’s why I expect to see more woven carpeting and teddy bear or boucle textures in 2024,” she points out.

Another design element Cohen anticipates is organic lines, which invoke natural influences within a space.

“Organic lines serve to subtly soften interiors or make waves – literally and figuratively – bringing tranquility and flow to flooring with curves and arches,” she says.

Regarding area rugs, sustainability will be all the rage next year.

“Hand-woven rugs crafted from natural materials will be treasured for their authenticity, uniqueness, and longevity. Dark, natural colors will lead the charge, and washable rugs, while practical, may not dominate the market as much because their longevity and overall aesthetic appeal are increasingly questionable,” says Kaiko.

Fresh and interesting rug shapes and irregular contours that offer a playful yet sophisticated touch will continue to break boundaries in the coming months, Kropovinsky expects.

“Vibrant shades and patterns in rugs are sure to command attention, as well,” he continues.

Furthermore, retro influences will be evident in rugs.

“Nostalgia is back in a big way, and we are going to continue to see the merging of classic and modern with area rug styles inspired by designs from the ’60s and ’70s,” predicts Cohen. “Also, checkerboard patterns dominated 2023, but in 2024, we expect to see more bold patterns playing with circles and dots. An area rug is the perfect place to be bold.”

Sophisticated pastels could have a significant resurgence next year, as well, as “pastel area rugs add a pop of color and sophistication,” Cohen says.
