Why such support for two-state solution?

We certainly do live in a confusing time. I am wondering why suddenly our president has decided that the two-state solution is the answer in the Middle East. Israel is against it and Palestine is against it. Our president must have forgotten, because he was only about 5 years old in 1948 when the United Nations made a two-state plan with the establishment of Israel. It lasted about two days until all the Arab nations invaded. I wonder why does he think that it will work this time?
