Woodland Middle School’s Drake named Lake Region Middle School Principal of the Year

Selection by Illinois Principals Association puts long time educator in contention for recognition at state level

Tiffany Drake, principal at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee, has been selected Lake Region Middle School principal of the year and is now a nominee for statewide recognition.

The selection by the Illinois Principals Association membership is based on the veteran educator’s qualities and strengths. Drake has 30 years experience in education and has been with Woodland Elementary District 50 for 23 years. She is in her fifth year as principal at Woodland Middle School and was assistant principal for 14 years.

“The middle school has faced several challenges over the past few years and Mrs. Drake has shown tremendous leadership and positivity as she led our district through those challenges,” District 50 board President Anna Chang-Yen said in a news release.

“She never backs down from hard work and continues to advocate for her students and staff to bring about meaningful change,” she added.

Drake credited the work of staff and the administrative team.

“This year, I am focused on moving our students down the Road to Success (this year’s theme) and this award is something I can take back to my students to show them that our hard work is paying off,” she said.

According to the district, Drake is known for building positive relationships and her ability to connect with staff and students builds a supportive environment and trusting atmosphere. Drake’s visibility and accessibility to students and staff in classrooms, hallways and elsewhere shows them the energy and passion she brings to school each day, according to the district.

“She tackles challenges head on with grace, humor, honesty and compassion,” Superintendent Robert Machak said in announcing the award to Woodland leaders.

Drake was honored with a plaque at Thursday’s school board meeting. District officials hope to learn in March whether she will be a state winner.
