Pets perish in East Dundee house fire

East Dundee & Countryside Fire Protection District officials said a dog and cat died in a Tuesday afternoon house fire, but no residents or firefighters were hurt.

Firefighters were called to the home on the 500 block of Reese Avenue in East Dundee just after 2 p.m. for a report of a house on fire.

Smoke was showing in the rear of the house and firefighters found a fire in the home’s basement. It took nearly 35 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Firefighters attempted to rescue two cats and a dog, but only one cat survived. Fire officials said it is being cared for at a nearby animal shelter.

The house sustained an estimated $100,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
