A reason to go out in Wheeling as cold snap starts to lift

Just in time for the bitter cold that’s gripped the suburbs for a week to ease up, the Wheeling Park District on Sunday gave people a reason to get back outside.

The park district’s Winterfest at Horizon Park featured activities like snow sculpting, snowman making and penguin egg hunt.

But the highlight for many was a sled dog demonstration from Free Spirit Siberian Rescue, followed by a meet and greet with the huskies that put on the show.

"It's amazing when you are going along with the dogs,“ said sled driver Mike Knill of Round Lake Beach. ”You're just gliding along peacefully. It's like a well-oiled machine."
