Hawthorne students learn of folk tales, family traditions through guest readers

In the week leading up to winter break, students in Kelly Lawrence’s classroom at Hawthorne Early Childhood Center were treated to a number of special guest readers, including several parents and Community Consolidated School District 21 board members, who shared insights into what their families do for the holidays or read aloud a related book.

“Having such a culturally diverse student population prompted me to not only want to personally learn more about other holiday celebrations and traditions, but also share these moments with my students,” Lawrence said.

Guests were encouraged to read a book about a holiday their family celebrates, share cultural clothing worn for the holiday, share special ornaments or decorations, or other special items or traditions their family does for the holidays.

One parent, for instance, read a story about the Grinch and talked about making cookies and spending time with family. Another shared special ornaments and a family photo with Santa.
