Fitness, painting, beekeeping among Community Education classes at MCC

McHenry County College recently released its Community Education schedule for classes that run January – March 2024. The new schedule can be viewed at www.mchenry.edu/coned.

Whether you want to explore a new activity or learn a new hobby, MCC has something for everyone. The offerings include a wide variety of personal development courses, engaging courses for senior interests, career training programs, and workforce development classes.

“Our Community Education classes are a great way to grow your skillset while connecting with others who have similar interests,” said Tressman Goode, coordinator of Community Education Programs at MCC. “We’re always adding new classes that are interesting and relevant to our community.”

Some of the featured personal development classes include a beekeeping series, “Small Engine Repair,” “RowFit: Indoor Rowing Fitness,” “Home Hydroponic Gardening,” and “Pet Portraits with Acrylic Paint.”

Back by popular demand, the beekeeping series will begin this February with “Beekeeping 101,” followed by “Seven Ways to Raise a Queen,” “Comb Honey,” and a field study class. The instructor, Larry Krengel, has been a beekeeper for almost 40 years and has been teaching the series for over 10 years.

Got a snowblower that won’t start? “Small Engine Repair” will teach you how to fix and maintain snow clearing and landscaping equipment so you can take care of your property without having to buy new equipment. The class is offered from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays from Feb. 27 – March 19, 6-8 p.m. at Woodstock High School.

“RowFit: Indoor Rowing Fitness” is a fun way to increase your activity in the winter months. Classes are held for six weeks and are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays at Sweeps & Skulls Indoor Rowing in Crystal Lake.

In “Home Hydroponic Gardening,” attendees will learn how to grow plants without soil and master home set-ups for growing lettuce, microgreens, and more year-round. Class meets every other week starting Feb. 27 through April 9, 6-8 p.m.Thursdays.

Paint your best friend in “Pet Portraits with Acrylic Paint” Wednesdays, Feb. 21 – March 6 from 6 – 8 p.m. The course is just one of many programs available through Community Education at MCC this winter/early spring. Courtesy of McHenry County College
