Fremd’s Walsh continues family legacy on the offensive line at Wyoming

There’s a legacy in Laramie.

Jack Walsh (Fremd), a 6-foot-3, 314-pound redshirt sophomore offensive lineman at the University of Wyoming, was named a Pro Football Focus first-team all-Mountain West selection this season. Walsh started all 13 games for the 9-4 Cowboys. After 10 games at right guard he shifted to right tackle due to an injury to a teammate. In the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl, Walsh helped Wyoming to a 16-15 victory over Toledo. This season was the first time since 1996 that Wyoming won at least 9 games, which included two victories over ranked opponents. Walsh also played in Wyoming’s 13 games in 2022, starting in two of them.

Jack Walsh followed the cue of his father to play football at Wyoming. A lineman at Driscoll Catholic, John Walsh also was a lineman for the Cowboys and was on the Wyoming teams that won 1987 and 1988 Western Athletic Conference championships.

In men’s volleyball, Princeton senior Ben Harrington (Glenbard West) opened the Tigers’ 2024 season Jan. 8 by setting an NCAA record. In a three-set sweep of Queens University of Charlotte, the 6-foot-4 Harrington ripped 13 service aces to set the single-match record. His previous high was 7, and the 13 aces eclipsed the previous record of 11 shared by four players during the rally scoring era, Princeton said. A two-time Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association first-team selection, Harrington added 8 kills and a block in the match.

Two weeks ago we led off this column with an item about Haley Holz (Palatine), a senior outside hitter for the New York University women’s volleyball team, who earned her second straight first-team Division III All-America honor. It also said she was named Academic All-District, which put her in consideration for Academic All-American. Holz indeed received that award from the College Sports Communicators on Jan. 9, first-team Division III Academic All-America for a second straight year. Holz has a grade-point average of 3.70 in her double-major of business and film and television at New York University.

Earlier this season in men’s basketball, R.J. Davis (Glenbrook South) earned a player of the week in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association. A freshman guard at Southwestern Michigan, Davis scored a team-high 18 and 20 points in a week’s split against Bethel and Kennedy King, and combined to make 9 of 17 three-point baskets.

The 2024 Chipotle All-American Game, a hockey game played Jan. 15 in Plymouth, Mich., offered some of the top prospects for the 2024 NHL Draft. Most of the players are playing for U.S. National Under-18 Team or United States Hockey League teams, and have committed to playing in college. The rosters included center Kamil Bednarik (Elmhurst, Boston College), goaltender Nick Kempf (Morton Grove, Notre Dame), defenseman Noah LaPointe (Hinsdale, Arizona State), and forwards Charlie Pardue (Winnetka, Notre Dame) and James Reeder (Glenview, Denver).
