You asked for high school sports scores, so now we are too

If you’re playing high school sports, it’s not the wins or losses you’ll remember but the relationships.

Maybe your teammates become lifelong friends. Maybe after a couple of years in college, you’re still swinging by your old alma mater to catch a game and say hi to your former coach.

If this describes you, you’re fortunate. These are the memories that matter.

But this isn’t fifth-grade park district sports anymore. The final score matters. We know you’re playing to win.

That’s why last week we started publishing scores again.

This is a matter of going back in time for us. For years — decades, actually — the Daily Herald published scores in all kinds of high school sports. Our scoreboard was a regular part of our high school sports coverage. And when I wrote in October that we were going to re-emphasize our local coverage again, many of you let me know you wanted to see us publish high school scores again.

So we are.

Here’s the thing, though. We need help to do this, just as we did in the old days.

So we’re asking varsity coaches across the suburbs to email us your team’s final score after each game or meet. Please send scores to prepsports@dailyherald.com. We know varsity coaches are very busy; it’s really a heck of a time commitment, and we’re not trying to add to a varsity coach’s burden, so feel free to ask someone to help with this one. Maybe an assistant coach, or a trusted parent.

We need these scores by 10 p.m. each night to get them in the next day’s Daily Herald. We’ll just publish the final scores, for now at least, but if you want to mention a leading performance it can only help when it comes time for us to pick All-Area teams and the like. Varsity scores only, please.

So enjoy the wins, don’t dwell too much over the losses, and treasure the relationships you make with teammates and coaches, maybe even opponents.

Thank you to all who help by sending in the final varsity scores. And of course, thank you for reading the Daily Herald and supporting local journalism.
