Check out some local notables
Wonderful story by Marty Maciaszek regarding the West Suburban Conference celebrating a century of athletic excellence. Having graduated from Downers Grove High School (now North) way back when and remembering those rivalries, especially with Hinsdale, it brought back to me many memories and to today’s reader what has proceeded in this area over the last 100 years.
While wishing a happy anniversary to the WSC, the article also got me thinking about individual accomplishments for a single rather than collective conference communities, i.e. Naperville. Accordingly, I direct your readers to come visit Century Walk’s 51st Public Art location, a mural entitled “Naperville Sports Notables“ located at the corner of Main Street and Jackson Ave. on the north side of Sullivan‘s restaurant.
What a viewer will find at this site is 15 graduates of Naperville high schools, across gender, ethnic and age spectrums, who have gone on to attain national and international acclaim. Athletes such as Candace Parker, Evan Lysacek, Sean Payton, Porter Moser and others are featured as well as the nine different sports in which they participated.
You will recognize the athletes by their sports attire while they are playing a round of golf at Naperville Country Club. which was celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2021. Best of all, not only will you learn a little bit about the amazing and prolific generation of high school athletes coming from Naperville’s School Districts #203 and #204, but because it’s public art, you will not have to pay a penny.
