5 people accused of robbing Naperville vape store

A Bartlett woman and four teenage boys have been charged with robbing a Naperville vape store.

Kelis Kirkland, 18, of the 100 block of Cedarfield Drive is charged with robbery. She appeared in court Thursday afternoon, where a judge denied pretrial detention.

Her co-defendants — ages 14, 16, and two 17-year-olds — are charged with robbery, burglary and retail theft. Three of the four are being detained until their next court date.

Prosecutors allege three of the boys entered the Smoke Area Vape Shop at 1570 W. Ogden Ave. around 8 p.m. Wednesday as the fourth boy held the door open.

They allege the three boys jumped over the counter and filled three bags with about $4,400 worth of merchandise.

When the clerk tried to fend them off, one of the boys threw a bottle of vape syrup at him, hitting him in the chest, prosecutors allege.

The four boys then left in a car driven by Kirkland. About five minutes later, a Naperville officer stopped the vehicle near River Road and Jefferson, authorities said.

According to the report, police officers found three backpacks in the car filled with merchandise from the shop.

Kirkland’s next court appearance is Jan. 29. The three detained juveniles are due back in court Tuesday, and the fourth has a Feb. 22 court appearance.
