VFW Post 981 accepting applications for scholarships
Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 981 is pleased to be accepting applications for two scholarship grants to be awarded in June 2024. These one-time scholarships will be in amounts as high as $3,000. They are being awarded in the memory of our comrades Wally Luettschwager and Bob Henderson.
Students who will or currently attend college in a degree program or a recognized trade school should apply. The ideal candidate will be an active duty or reserve member of the military, honorably discharged veteran or a direct descendant of an honorably discharged veteran (parent, grandparent, etc.).
Members of the Arlington Heights community and surrounding communities served by Post 981 will have preference with all other things being equal. Previous winners attended Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Conant, Glenbard East, Prospect and Rolling Meadows high schools.
A lifelong resident of Arlington Heights, Luettschwager served honorably in the U.S. Army in combat during the Korean War. He came home and was an active member of VFW Post 981 for more than 60 years, and served in many capacities including commander. Luettschwager played an integral part in the organizing and running of the Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade which has been part of the community for over 100 years.
Henderson also served in the Army as a combat infantryman in Korea where he was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in battle His daughter, Lynn, provided the funding for the 2024 scholarship in his memory.

The deadline for submitting the application for the fall 2024 school year is March 1, 2024. Finalists will be interviewed by the post’s scholarship committee. The recipients will be contacted by May 15, 2024.
