New DMV pop-up opens to meet senior demand for services

After thousands of senior drivers flocked to a temporary DMV at SeatGeek Stadium last year, Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias debuted a pop-up, walk-in center in Bridgeview Tuesday.

The new facility is “senior focused” and will offer services including road tests, driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations and ID cards.

The SeatGeek site in Bridgeview accommodated over 9,000 seniors between late September and Dec. 29, when it closed.

The influx comes following a Sept. 1 switch to an appointments-based system for driver’s services like tests and license renewals. Numerous seniors, who are required to take road tests after reaching age 79 to renew licenses, complained about difficulties securing an appointment.

This fall, Giannoulias also opened temporary DMVs in Calumet Township, Evanston and Westchester for seniors, as well as one in Addison for the general population.

Asked about pop-up sites in the Northwest suburbs, a spokeswoman said the agency was continuing to explore options and had heard from numerous interested towns.

The new pop-up is located at the Bridgeview Community Center, 7902 S. Oketo Ave.

To book a driver’s services appointment, go to ilsos.gov or call (800) 252-8980.

“We have much more planned for 2024,” Giannoulias said at the Tuesday event.
