New Ukrainian Storytime at Prospect Heights Public Library on Jan. 24

When an influx of Ukrainian patrons, families and recent immigrants regularly began visiting the Prospect Heights Public Library following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the librarians took notice.

To welcome this emerging community, the library stocked the World Languages bookshelves with Ukrainian books for kids and adults, borrowed out book-bags with selected fiction and nonfiction to area schools, purchased Ukrainian DVDs, and included the Ukrainian language in their online LOTE 4KIDS read-aloud books for children.

The Prospect Heights Public Library is pleased to announce the newly formed Ukrainian Storytime, which will be held from 6:30-7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24. The Storytime is geared for 3-7 year olds with adult(s). Siblings are always welcome. Thereafter, it will be offered every fourth Wednesday of the month, with themes changing monthly. January’s theme is “Welcome!”

Ukrainian Storytime will welcome all through an energetic mix stories, songs, games and crafts. Diana Zagarii will read and lead the session. Youth Librarian and World Languages Storytime coordinator, Terri Murphy, will assist as the children play games together, enjoy craft-making and have fun. A condensed version of an art exhibit the Prospect Heights Public Library featured in August by Ukrainian artist Masha Vyshedska will grace the walls. It shows illustrated stories about the resilience of the Ukrainian people during these troubled times displayed in graphic novel format.

Ukrainian Storytime is a time for children to have fun and for adults to gather and socialize. Please reserve a spot for your child(ren) by registering at bit.ly/UKRstorytime or phone (847) 259-3500 and ask for Youth Services.

The Prospect Heights Public Library is at 12 N. Elm St., in Prospect Heights.
