Des Plaines men facing gun, cannabis charges

Nearly two months after a Des Plaines house was hit by gunfire, someone has been charged with pulling the trigger, police said this week.

Nathan Gibson, 27, of the 2800 block of South Scott Street, is charged with felony reckless discharge of a firearm, felony possession of cannabis, felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

Additionally, Gibson’s 26-year-old roommate, Nicholas Elliott, is charged with felony possession of cannabis.

The shooting was reported to police on Nov. 10 when a resident in a neighboring house on the 2800 block of South Scott Street found a bullet hole in an upstairs closet wall. Investigating officers subsequently found a bullet hole in an exterior wall of the house and then discovered a bullet hole in an upstairs window of Gibson’s house, according to police.

The hole in the window, which was covered with black plastic, was directly across from where the bullet had entered the victim’s home, police said.

Police searched the neighboring home that night and recovered a 9mm carbine, authorities said. They also found a large glass jar containing cannabis in Gibson’s bedroom and a bag of cannabis in Elliott’s bedroom, authorities said.

In all, about 1 pound of cannabis was seized, police said.

A police spokeswoman said investigators don’t know why Gibson fired the shot into his neighbor’s house.

The men were arrested and charged Friday, police said. Both were released after being processed.

Nicholas Elliott of Des Plaines is charged with possession of cannabis.
