Car catches fire on Route 53

No injuries were reported after an SUV caught fire Sunday morning on Route 53 near Higgins Road in Elk Grove Village, authorities said.

Firefighters called to the highway’s northbound lanes at 6:30 a.m. found the Jeep Cherokee in flames on the right shoulder.The blaze which started in the engine, completely destroyed the vehicle, Elk Grove fire officials said.

The fire was extinguished in about five minutes, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
