New Year’s means time to try again

“Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch (of fish).”

—Luke 5 :4 (AMP)

This year I’m celebrating my 68th New Year. Which one is it for you?

I have family members who are enjoying their 40-some or 20-some, others who are in-between, and a granddaughter who will be 1-year-old on New Year's Day. Obviously this will be her first New Year's and birthday celebration.

Each year we all do our best to let go of the old and ring in the new wondering what it will hold in store for us.

Then there’s the good old resolutions, which I like to refer to as goals. Time and again, we try one more time on the treadmill, one more entry in to our journal, one more new diet, and we even try cracking open our Bible for a study. Just mentioning it tires us out. Whatever we set out to resolve, no matter how tired we are or how mundane, routine or tedious it may seem, it’s time to try again.

The disciple Peter was about to give up when Jesus instructed him to go back out into the deep waters and get ready for a great catch this time.

Peter felt much like we do when he replied to Jesus, “Master, we worked hard all night, (to the point of exhaustion) and caught nothing in our nets, but at your word (I will do as you say) and lower the nets (again)." The Bible tells us "When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets were at the point of breaking." It goes on to tell us, that they even called their friends to help them and got two boatloads so full that the boats began to sink.

After this Peter felt bad that he had possessed little faith in trying it again.

They way I see it, there seems to be a spiritual blessing in trying again, regardless of how we feel.

I can’t say for sure this will be the year we achieve our goals, but if we want a blessing that will overflow, as we ring in the new year, let’s give it our all and try it again.
